Where to stay in Marrakech: Natural light meets tradition with a twist

Riad Karmela Princesse: Peaceful oasis in the heart of Marrakech’s Medina

One of the best parts of planning a holiday is definitely looking for accommodations and places to eat that are quirky, remarkable, out of the ordinary.

All things that can really make your holiday unforgettable as well as experience the local culture and lifestyle.

I knew from the beginning that booking hotels for Marrakech was going to be a nightmare – too many amazing choices, too many options to shortlist and select. I felt like walking in a candy shop with a very limited allowance. The question was: Where to stay in Marrakech?

On the other hand, I also knew that choosing the right place was going to be extra important, given that travelling to Morocco was inevitably going to expose myself and my boyfriend (as a gay couple) to a series of realities far from our day-to-day. There is an extensive list of documented stories – just a Google search away – about LGBT travelers and their experiences in Morocco (both good and not so great). It was important for us to stay in a place where security, respect and acceptance were going to be a priority.

Luckily, when we got in touch with Riad Karmela Princesse, we discovered a world of professionals and artsy entrepreneurs. The place looked stunning and our conversation with Joel, the general manager, got us extremely excited about our stay.

The Riad Karmela is an 18th-century building restored in the Moroccan tradition with Zouac-painted ancient doors, four orange trees in the middle of the patio and a fountain in Fes Zellige tiles. If you live for palms, harmonic colour palettes and dramatic decor, this place is worth your Instagram!

Apart from its decor, the best part about this riad is its location – in the very heart of the old part of Marrakech – the Medina. The famous markets – Souks – are less than a minute walk distance; this will come in handy when you have to walk back to your riad with your hands full of amazing Moroccan souvenirs and tools.
